Lacrosse is the sport on the schedule that is hardest to predict and most fun to watch live. This week proved both points. Eighteen goal blowouts on one field, one goal nailbiters on the next, and a Saturday slate that included a goalie pulling off a save column most of us have never seen.
Here is the boys and girls week from May 4 through May 10.
Boys: Erskine doubled up on eighteens.
Eighteen to one against Northern Maine Moose on Saturday May 9. Eighteen to two against Nokomis and MCI a week earlier on May 4. Erskine just went to a midnight curfew on every Class C opponent the schedule put in front of them. Class C is going to be a fight in June, but Erskine spent the week telling Class C that the road runs through Erskine.
Scarborough did the same to Oak Hill, Monmouth, and Lisbon. Eighteen to nothing on May 8. Class A boys is supposed to have a top five conversation. Scarborough spent the week not joining that conversation and just outscoring people. The Big Board had this one tagged HEAVYWEIGHT, then the score was eighteen to zero, so HEAVYWEIGHT was correct on one side.
South Portland 11, Brunswick 10. May 8. The Slate had this one as a coin flip win probability and the coin landed on its side, then fell over toward South Portland by one goal. Twenty one combined goals across one of the few games this week that was decided by less than three. Both teams should send each other Christmas cards. Both also have to play this game again in June, which is great news for everyone except their respective goalies.
Greely 10, Gorham 9. Windham 7, Cape Elizabeth 6. Two more Class A south games that came down to a single possession on May 8. The class is going to be fun. Class A boys is shaping up like everyone is one bad bounce from being the team nobody wants to play, except Scarborough.
Boys total tags. The board called five Marquee games on the week. Four of them landed in our favor. The fifth was the Brunswick at South Portland coin flip that we should have flagged as the toss up it always was.
Girls: Gardiner and Hall Dale combined to put twenty three on Leavitt.
Twenty three to nothing. May 7. Class B girls in the Kennebec Valley region is shaping up to be a Gardiner story this spring, and this game was just the loudest version of the same chapter. Bonny Eagle did the same thing to Morse on May 8, 17 to 2, and Fryeburg Academy hung sixteen on Gray New Gloucester and Poland.
Three girls games went down to one goal. Deering 8, Biddeford 7 on May 5. Biddeford 8, Fryeburg Academy 7 on May 9. Lake Region 10, Edward Little 9 on May 7. The middle of the Class A girls bracket is going to be ugly to predict and beautiful to watch.
Cheverus dropped nineteen on Marshwood. Cheverus 19, Marshwood 7 on May 8. Cheverus is doing what Cheverus does. The cool data point: Cheverus is a girls team that is averaging more goals per game than any boys team in the state right now. Reread that sentence. We had to.
