Washington Academy runs past Houlton 36-14

Washington Academy beat Houlton 36-14 at home on September 4, riding a fast running game that put up 299 yards on the ground.

The first quarter was scoreless. Then William Ferguson broke a 53-yard touchdown run in the second, and George Welch followed with a 5-yard score, both with the two point conversion good, to make it 16-0. Houlton answered with a 60-yard kickoff return, but the two point try failed and Washington Academy carried a 16-6 lead to the half.

The two backs kept it going in the third. Ferguson added a 46-yard touchdown and Welch a 56-yarder to push the margin to 30-6. In the fourth, Sam Johnson threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Giovanni Favuzzi. Hunter Sanford scored on a 2-yard run for Houlton late, with the conversion good, to set the final at 36-14.

Ferguson finished with 191 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, and added three two point conversions. Welch ran for 86 yards and two scores on eight carries. Johnson completed 6 of 9 passes for 54 yards, and Favuzzi caught five balls for 51 yards. Washington Academy piled up 364 total yards.

Houlton was held to 30 total yards, with minus 14 on the ground. Sanford went 8 of 19 for 44 yards through the air with two interceptions, and also led the rushing attempts with 16 carries. F. Hallissey had two sacks and two tackles for loss for Washington Academy, and Johnson and J. Corey each recorded an interception.

Washington Academy is 1-0. Houlton is 0-1.
