Championship weekend is in the books, the Gold Balls are spoken for, and the gremlins have officially earned a long nap. Fourteen titles across baseball, softball, and lacrosse, and several of them flat out refused to end on schedule.
Here are your 2026 Maine state champions.
Baseball
Class A: Gorham over Bangor, 3 to 2, in eleven innings.
Class B: Fryeburg Academy over Cony, 4 to 3.
Class C: Monmouth Academy over Washington Academy, 5 to 4.
Class D: Fort Fairfield over Telstar, 4 to 1.
Softball
Class A: Cheverus over Hampden Academy, 3 to 2.
Class B: Medomak Valley over Gardiner, 7 to 0.
Class C: Dirigo over Bucksport, 5 to 1.
Class D: North Yarmouth Academy over Penobscot Valley, 14 to 4.
Boys Lacrosse
Class A: Falmouth over Yarmouth, 13 to 8.
Class B: Marshwood over York, 8 to 7.
Class C: North Yarmouth Academy over Maranacook/Winthrop, 17 to 6.
Girls Lacrosse
Class A: Thornton Academy over Kennebunk, 9 to 8.
Class B: Greely over Freeport, 7 to 4.
Class C: Maranacook/Winthrop over North Yarmouth Academy, 13 to 3.
Some droughts ended, one of them for a whole region. Fryeburg Academy won its first baseball title since 1983, riding a complete game from senior left hander Oliver Dean, who shook off an early Cony lead, retired eleven Rams in a row at one stretch, and held them scoreless over the final four innings. Brady Chappell's home run over the fence in left put Fryeburg ahead for good, and Dean helped his own cause with a leadoff double that came around to score. On the same St. Joseph's College field in Standish, Fort Fairfield gave Aroostook County its first baseball state champion since 1999, with Jonah LeBlanc carrying a one run game into the seventh, Cayden Ala slamming the door, and Graedon King driving in two on a three hit afternoon. Dirigo and Marshwood went further still, winning the first state championships in their programs' history, Dirigo in softball and Marshwood in boys lacrosse.
Two games refused to end on time. Class A baseball went eleven innings before Gorham edged Bangor 3 to 2, the winning run scoring when Hunter Finck punched a two out single to bring home Cooper Whitehead, and Wyatt Washburn closed it out. Class C baseball was the comeback of the weekend at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, where Washington Academy jumped Monmouth Academy 4 to 0 in the first inning. The Mustangs chipped away and pushed two across in the seventh to win 5 to 4 and repeat as champions. "No moment is too big for them," coach Eric Palleschi said. "You get down 4 to 0, they could have easily just said, you know what, it is summertime. But not this group." Levi Laverdiere went the distance with eight strikeouts and then retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to seal it.
The circle ran the softball weekend. Cheverus closed out a perfect season 3 to 2 over Hampden Academy in Auburn, the Stags' second Class A title in three years. Addison DeRoche, Maine's Gatorade Player of the Year and a Florida State commit as a junior, struck out fifteen and held Hampden hitless through four innings, then ended it with the tying run standing on second base. Sadie Collins had staked the Stags to an early lead with a two out single. Medomak Valley blanked Gardiner 7 to 0 behind nine strikeouts from Sidney Nicholls, a fitting end for a team that had already held opponents hitless ten times this season. And in Class C, Dirigo finished a 19 and 1 season by toppling defending champion Bucksport 5 to 1 for the first softball title in school history, its first trip to a final since 2012. Senior Lana Waite went the distance in the circle, then drove in two insurance runs with a double in the seventh to snap Bucksport's eighteen game winning streak.
Lacrosse delivered a thriller and a few statements. Class B boys was a one goal classic. Marshwood and York were tied at seven before Hayden Demeroto buried the goal that won it in the final minute, his third of the day, and goalie Nate Kelley sealed the 8 to 7 final with a save at the end. In Class A, top seeded Falmouth handled Yarmouth 13 to 8, with Hayden Davis scoring four, Will Davis three and TJ Saulter three; Yarmouth had won back to back Class B titles before moving up to Class A this season. On the girls side, Thornton Academy survived Kennebunk 9 to 8 on a Sophia Sirois hat trick, Greely knocked off reigning champion Freeport 7 to 4 for its fifth final appearance in six years, and Maranacook/Winthrop capped an undefeated season with a second straight Class C crown, 13 to 3 over NYA, scoring 29 seconds in and never trailing as Cooper Davis poured in five goals and Mya St. Pierre added three.
North Yarmouth Academy had the busiest weekend of anyone, hauling home two Gold Balls in Class D softball and Class C boys lacrosse. NYA and Maranacook/Winthrop also traded the two Class C lacrosse finals, with NYA taking the boys 17 to 6 and Maranacook/Winthrop answering on the girls side.
