Softball Through Two Weeks: Two Schools Are Sweeping And Class A Has A Cliff

It is the second week of May and Maine softball has a personality. Two schools are running the table in two sports each. One end of Class A is loaded, the other end is winless. Aroostook is loud. Here is what the standings actually say.

Washington Academy Is Doing What Nobody Else Is

Washington Academy is 7 wins and 0 losses in softball, ranked first in Class C, with a Tournament Index of 30.674. That number is the highest TI in the softball file across every class.

The school's baseball team is also 6 wins and 0 losses. On May 6 they played Houlton/GHCA in both sports on the same day. Final scores: 22 to 1 in baseball, 14 to 0 in softball. One school scored 36 runs, the other scored 1.

Oxford Hills Is Doing The Same In Class A

Oxford Hills is also doing it in two sports. The softball team is 6 wins and 0 losses. The baseball team is 6 wins and 0 losses with the highest baseball TI in the file (30.313). On May 6 the baseball team won 14 to 2 over Lewiston. Two schools, four undefeated diamond programs between them.

The Other Unbeaten Programs

Through the first two weeks of softball there are ten teams with 4 or more wins and zero losses:

  • Washington Academy 7 and 0 (Class C)

  • Oxford Hills 6 and 0 (Class A)

  • Medomak Valley 6 and 0 (Class B)

  • Dirigo 6 and 0 (Class C)

  • Gorham 5 and 0 (Class A)

  • Cheverus 5 and 0 (Class A)

  • Monmouth 5 and 0 (Class C)

  • Penobscot Valley 4 and 0 (Class D)

  • Telstar 4 and 0 (Class C)

  • Gardiner 4 and 0 (Class B)

Class A Is Top Heavy

Three Class A teams are still unbeaten: Oxford Hills, Gorham, Cheverus. On the other end, Messalonskee is 0 and 6, Brunswick is 0 and 6, Cape/Falmouth is 0 and 5, and the Deering/Portland Coop is 0 and 5. The middle of the class is thin right now. May still has plenty of season left to fix that.

Aroostook And The Northern Programs Are Loud

Penobscot Valley shut out Deer Isle Stonington 15 to 0 on May 6. Penobscot Valley sits 4 and 0 with the highest TI in Class D. Bucksport is 6 and 1 with a 14 to 1 win over Ellsworth on May 6 and an active six game win streak.

Vinalhaven Keeps Winning

Vinalhaven softball is 5 and 1 in Class D, including a 10 to 7 win at Carrabec on May 6. The island school playing competitive softball is one of the fun stories of the spring.

Big Margins From The Last 48 Hours

  • Poland 20, Wells 0 (May 6)

  • Mattanawcook 17, Calais 1 (May 6)

  • Penobscot Valley 15, Deer Isle Stonington 0 (May 6)

  • Bucksport 14, Ellsworth 1 (May 6)

  • Washington Academy 14, Houlton/GHCA 0 (May 6)

What Comes Next

The state qualifiers and the regional brackets are still weeks away. There is plenty of time for the picture to change, for the middle of Class A to show signs of life, for someone to interrupt Washington Academy.

We started Analytics207 because Maine high school sports deserve a place that watches every game, not just the ones that show up on the local sports page. The site has come a long way in a short time. We hope the players, the coaches, and the families filling the bleachers can see what we are trying to do here. The job is to celebrate Maine athletes, every score, every win, every dropped third strike. We are nowhere near done.
