Thirty two points. That is the number Hampden Academy laid down in the Boys Class A race at the Bangor XC meet on September 4, and in cross country a total that low is the sound of a whole team arriving together. Five scorers, one tight bundle, and a team win to carry home.

The math behind the 32 is the part worth talking about. Hampden Academy averaged 18:33.9 across its scoring five, and the gap from its first runner to its fifth was just 45.72. That pack split is the story of the day. When a squad stacks its top five inside that little room on a course, the points stay low and the win stays close to home.

Messalonskee was next at 46 points, a runner up finish that kept the front of the standings honest and gave the top of the board its shape. Behind them came Brewer at 81 points, then host Bangor at 100, with Skowhegan sitting sixth at 139. Up front, one name stood alone. Samuel Bergmark of Bangor posted the fastest winning time of the Boys day at 16:47.42, and he did it with room to spare. That clocking was 75.1 seconds clear of second place in the same race, the kind of margin that turns a race into a solo effort down the final straight. On his home course, in front of his own crowd, Bergmark set the pace nobody else could touch.

Hampden Academy owns the top line with its 32. But the meet belonged to everyone who found a new best, from the front of the race to the last runner home.
